The increasing complexity and safety requirements of embedded components and systems is a real and present challenge for the automotive industry. Modern vehicles, ever complex, are now designed with up to 70 Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in some cases, units which can often be tasked with controlling highly-critical functions.

The ISO 26262 (Functional Safety) standard is the de-facto standard for embedded systems in road vehicles. To guarantee the appropriate levels of road safety, ISO 26262 addresses the planning and development of safety-critical systems, setting out the Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) requirements for ECUs. The higher the ASIL of any given specific system, the higher the development and verification & validation integrity requirements that need to be considered. For the highest level specified, ASIL-D, up to 40% of the development effort easily goes into verification & validation and safety management activities.
